Tom Bowen

Thomas Ambrose Bowen, known worldwide as Tom Bowen, was born in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia in 1916. A humble Australian carpenter with no formal medical training, he developed a unique hands-on therapy after World War II while searching for ways to help relieve human suffering. Through careful observation, he discovered that gentle movements over muscles and connective tissue could stimulate profound responses within the body. Tom often described his work as a “Gift from God.”

Beginning in the 1950s in Geelong, Australia, Tom Bowen and his assistant, Rene Horwood, treated people from all walks of life — often free of charge, especially children, injured athletes, and those in need. His reputation spread rapidly because of the remarkable results many clients experienced. By the 1970s, government studies reported that he was treating thousands of people each year.

What made Bowenwork unique was Tom Bowen’s philosophy that the body has an innate ability to heal and re-balance itself when given the proper stimulus and rest. Rather than forcefully manipulating the body, Bowenwork uses gentle, precise moves followed by pauses that allow the nervous system time to respond.

Tom Bowen passed away in 1982, but his work continued through students such as Oswald Rentsch, who helped introduce Bowenwork to the world. Today, Bowenwork is practiced in more than 40 countries and is respected internationally for its gentle, holistic approach to wellness and restorative care.to each client's specific situation.
